Just had an amazing conversation with the National Fraternal Order of Police on how departments treat police officer’s families after a suicide loss, lifting the stigma within the department, and how postvention is prevention. My grief journey was delayed and further damaged because my marriage was blamed for my late husband’s suicide by his department in their official report and autopsy report and was ignored and shunned by his chief. The FOP knows my story can help and wants to stay in contact with me. They are actually putting a program together over the very same thing…it just got started up 6 months ago. Looks like change is coming.
